Qld: Beattie increases pressure for BHP intervention

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE is increasing pressure on the federal government to
intervene in the long-running dispute between BHP and central-Queensland coal miners.

The mining giant and unions are at loggerheads over new enterprise bargaining agreements.

Mr BEATTIE blames the dispute on the federal system, which he says makes industrial
relations into a battlefield.

He says the dispute, which has involved rolling stoppages, is costing Australia money
and is damaging its trade reputation.

Mr BEATTIE says it's time for those in federal government to get off their backsides
and resolve the dispute, because the state government does not have jurisdiction to intervene.
