A DASH OF SPEED IN COLLEGE RUNNERS.(SPORTS)

Byline: BILL ARSENAULT Special to the Saratoga TU

Athlete of week:

George Washington University junior Darrell Andruski has been named Colonial Athlete of the Week after finishing 16th in a field of 125 runners in the Navy Invitational recently in Annapolis, Md. Andruski of Clifton Park (Shenendehowa High) recorded a 25:43 clocking over the 8K course. It was the fastest time for a George Washington runner since 1999.

Andruski followed up that effort by finishing ninth out of 85 runners in the Mount St. Mary's Invitational this past weekend in Emmitsburg, Md. His time was 26:29.26.

Last season as a sophomore, Andruski finished 76th out of 196 runners in the NCAA Regionals in Lehigh, Pa.

Andruski and his teammates will be in action in the George Washington Invitational Saturday in Centerville, Va.

Sweeney's big start:

Freshman Jamie Sweeney of Saratoga Springs (Saratoga Springs High) is off to a great start with the University of Rhode Island women's cross country team.

Ask, and you shall receive: seven fundamentals of candidate fund raising.(FEATURE)

Most candidates detest asking for money. In fact, some dislike it so much they simply do not do it. But if you do not raise money, you are forced to do one of two things: either fund your campaign out of your own pocket or run without money.

The former is fine if you are wealthy and can afford to write a big check, as Jon Corzine did when he spent $60 million of his own money to win a Senate seat in New Jersey or when Michael Bloomberg wrote a $74 million check to run for and win the mayor's race in New York. The latter is OK if you are a safe incumbent or a prohibitive front-runner running against an unknown long shot, who has no capacity to fund a serious campaign against you.

But if you are in any other situation, it is not OK.

Candidates in most elections bear the brunt of fund raising. Unless you are running for a highly competitive U.S. Senate seat or in one of 25 or 30 congressional districts that have been targeted by national party committees and interest groups for wide-open combat, it is unlikely that other forces will assume all or most of the burden for you.

Most contributors want to be personally asked by candidates. They want incumbent--and future--public officials to know who they are.

After you have created a campaign budget, you have to turn your attention to identifying and reaching potential contributors.

There are four ways for candidates to raise money: …

APPLICATION.(placement of lighting, effect on distribution)(Brief Article)

Distribution Pattern Uses

ESTIMATING MAXIMUM SPACING

Ideally, all light energy produced would be focused into desired "lighted" zones with no wasted energy being directed elsewhere. This would require an infinite array of distributions, with the ability to tune them to every site condition.

While this is not realistic, the combination of careful luminaire selection, mounting height, and huminaire placement, can produce very efficient designs, using just four basic distribution patterns.

For each of the basic distributions, variations such as range and the characteristics of horizontal vs. vertical lamp optics, produce additional choices. …

WOMAN NOT GUILTY IN LARCENY DEFENDANT DENIED KNOWLEDGE OF HOME-REPAIR SCAM.(Local)

Byline: Joe Picchi

An Albany County Court jury late Wednesday found a 29-year-old Clifton Park woman not guilty on charges stemming from a home-repair scheme, according to Assistant District Attorney Lawrence P. Wiest.

Before the jury of 10 men and 2 women received the case at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Penny Bennett testified in her own defense that she cashed a check for $1,600 and attempted to cash another check for $3,800 only as a favor to her brother.

The jury returned the verdict at 10:55 p.m. finding Bennett not guilty on charges of second-degree grand larceny and attempted second-degree grand larceny.

Bennett denied ever knowing about the …
